There are a few steps you need to take when securing your Sport Pilot License.

Let's assume you are beginning this process from scratch, meaning you do not already have a FAA Pilot's License.

First of all, this is a great aircraft to fly.   It is fun and offers enough challenge to make you feel like an accomplished pilot when you make the aircraft do what you want it to do.   It isn't difficult to learn to fly a PPC but it does require a few steps.

First, this is a light sport aircraft and it requires an FAA Sport Pilot License.   To get a license, you must find a CFI (here I am) and have a minimum of 12 hours of instruction to be signed-off for a checkride.   In those 12 hours, you have 10 hours of dual instruction and 2 hours of solo flight.

Second, you have to take and pass a written exam (not difficult to do) in order to be able to be signed-off for your checkride.   Also, I require the written to be passed before you solo.  But don't worry, you'll find the test easy to take once you have prepared for it and you will have some time before you will be ready to solo.

Third, you'll also need a Student Pilot's license which you get from a Designated Examiner.   This is really easy and during one day when we are training, I'll take you to an examiner who will fill out paperwork and issue your license.   It costs around $30 and doesn't require anything but a driver's license.

Lessons usually run 2 hours.    That includes some ground school, flight briefing, and then about 75 minutes of flight time.   These lessons are "one on one" which assures you get personal instruction and have lots of time to ask questions and develope your flying skills.

The cost of your lesson is $120 per hour/lesson.   That includes the ground school and flight time.   You'll learn in my aircraft which is a new 100 hp AirWolf.   You'll take your dual in this aircraft, solo in this aircraft, and take your checkride in this aircraft.   So, all you have to do for training is study and bring your enthusiasm!

The written test is around $150.   It is administered at approved testing sites around Denver.   You can start to study for this test immediately by going to: www.fatwingflyers.com and select "SP Test" on the left side of the page.   It will take you to a practice area where you will select to take a 40 question test - random questions.  These are the exact questions and answers that are on the FAA written.  So, after taking these tests several times, you'll be scoring in the 90 percentile and will have no problem taking the test and passing.   A ground school is offered each month and you can take a day to hear all of the information you will need to know for both the written and checkride.   That runs $200 for the day.

The checkride is around $350.   It is administered by a PPC Designated Examiner.   You will have no problem passing this event.....most students found they were more excited in showing the examiner what they knew than scared about what he/she might ask.   It is a very positive experience.

There are three books you need to consider buying:

                                                                       The Powered Parachute Flying Handbook

                                                                       The Sport Pilot Checkride Book

Practical Test Standards for Sport Pilot

I can supply these books or you can order them from Amazon.com and have them delivered to your door ASAP.  The first book to buy would be the Powered Parachute Flying Handbook since it covers everything you need to know in small chunks.

Now let's talk about what you need to really do at this point!!!!!   Let's arrange an hour flight to let you see what the sport is about.   Then, when we land and you are hooked, we'll get you the Powered Parachute Flying Handbook to begin reading and talk about future lessons.

Don't let the cost scare you away.  If you really want to learn to fly these machines, we'll make it happen one way or the other.

Let me know what else you need.   Call me anytime to arrange a flight.   I fly near Hudson, Colorado and can do so anytime during the week or weekends.

Take Care and I look forward to hearing from you!

1)   If you are starting from scratch, you will need to take the Sport Pilot Written Test for Powered Parachute.   After studying for this test and we are assured you will easily pass, I shall endorse your logbook to take the test.

These tests are provided FAA testing centers.  These are not easy to find but in our region we utilize:

TestProCenter, Inc.   located in the "Hangar 8" building at Centennial Airport in the Denver Tech Center area.   Phone :  303.792.2067

Their most recent posting of "Hours of Operation" was:
                                                                                                            Monday        0900-1830
                                                                                                            Tuesday       closed
                                                                                                            Wednesday   0900-1830
                                                                                                            Thursday      0900-1630
                                                                                                            Friday           0900-1830
                                                                                                            Saturday       0830-1730

It is highly recommended you call to make a reservation to be sure a computer is sitting there ready for you to utilize.

It may be possible to find a testing center in your area.   Go to the internet and "Google"  F"AA Testing Centers "or try "Lasergrade Centers".   You may be able to find a location closer to your home.   But remember, there are fewer and fewer of these centers around so we're just glad the TestProCenter is available!  Try typing in this link in the address window: http://www.lasergrade.com/faa.shtml   When you get to this page, scroll to the lower portion of the page and enter your zip code and see what comes up!

2)   Also, if you are starting from scratch, you will also need to obtain either a "Student Pilot Certificate" or a "3rd Class Medical Certificate".   These documents allow me to endorse you for solo flight as well as your solo cross-country.  The certificate also allows me to endorse you for your checkride.

The "Student Pilot Certificate" is provided by a "Designated Examiner" or "DE".  These are individuals who have been certified by the FAA to perform a multitude of functions and one being the issuance of this certificate.   This can be any DE.....the "Student Pilot Certificate" does not require a DE who only deals in Sport Pilot PPCs.  If you have an airport nearby that has a flight school, you can call them and ask who they utilize.   They should have a DE fairly close by.

If they do not, we also have a DE here in the Denver area and she can issue your certificate.   Her information is:

Bev Cameron    FAA Designated Pilot Examiner,   Erie Municipal Airport       Erie, Colorado     Phone:   303.665.6352

Sometimes it is easier to find a physician who is local to your area who can issue a 3rd Class Medical.   For the most part, the medical is easy.   However, remember, you do not need a medical to fly as a Sport Pilot.   And, if you believe you might not fair well taking the medical exam I strongly suggest you do not.   If you fail your most recent medical you cannot fly as a Sport Pilot.   You can go through a lot of hoops to clear-up this problem but it is easier to just find a DE to issue a "Student Pilot Certificate".

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call:   303.570.1741
